Medical Aspects of Harsh Environments

"Three books warn you how cold weather can kill you."
Dan Youra, Editor

This volume of 3 books on how cold weather kills come from the US Army
Medical Aspects of Harsh Environments, Vol 1
#1 Medical Aspects of Cold Environments
#2 Pictorial Atlas of Freezing Cold Injury
#3 Prevention and Management of Cold Weather Injuries
Prepare For “Teeth-Chattering” Cold Weather

Research conducted by the United States Army raises a warning on how freezing weather can injure and kill people. Its conclusions are timely in advance of the freezing temperatures forecast for the approaching fall and winter. Farmers’ Almanac forecasts a “teeth-chattering” cold one. Freezing temperatures could rival those of last year, when the infamous Polar Vortex blew in some of the coldest temperatures on record in the northern hemisphere.

With permission from the US Army, publisher Dan Youra reprints three of its most relevant medical books on the effects of freezing temperatures on human beings. Two books are Medical Aspects of Cold Environments and Pictorial Atlas of Freezing Cold Injury originally printed by the US Army Department of Medicine in its Medical Aspects of Harsh Environments, Vol 1 (2001). The third book, Prevention and Management of Cold Weather Injuries, is a reprint of The Surgeon General's Technical Bulletin MED-508 (2005).

The three studies originally appeared as bound documents. The publisher, Youra Media, updates each book onto a computer file with links from the table of contents to each chapter. Digital versions of the books can be downloaded as individual files and as a three-part volume from the publisher’s website ACoolBook.com

Every person in the path of an arctic Polar Vortex can benefit from the Army’s research about how to recognize the first signs of frost bite and hypothermia. The books list precautions people can take to prevent physical damage that can cause serious injure and even death. The first book on cold environments warns of physiological and psychological harm, discusses clinical treatments, and suggests strategies for prevention. The pictorial atlas is a collection of 177 explicit photographs, which graphically show frost bitten fingers and feet, hypothermic patients, and amputated limbs.

One photo shows the deformed hands of a five-year-old child, who suffered hypothermia at the age of 4 months. Colorful photos such as the child's hands can shock a person into recognizing the critical need of respecting the threatening power of cold temperatures and the need to properly prepare for surviving, not only a Polar Vortex, but also a walk to school or an exercise run around the block.

In addition to the study of survival in cold weather in Volume 1, the Army studies survival in hot temperatures. Volume 2 in the series covers survival on mountains and in other environments.
